FMP Project Proposal

For my FMP I am going to a photo series with the theme of documentary photography, specialising in street photography. I am going to do this by photography around London and my surrounding areas. I have chosen to do this as my final major project because I really enjoy documentary photography and I will be perusing it in the next academic year genre and I would like to expand my knowledge and test the limits of what I can do as a photographer. I chosen street photography as the focal point of my subject because it is a good way to show the way people act when they do not realise they are being photographed. Throughout my two years of doing photography at college I have never explored documentary photography in depth so I am excited to try out a new genre that I have always been interested in trying out. My audience for my final shoot will be everyone who may be interested in people and the way they act and their movements. My final pieces could be used in a magazine series or in a photographic book. My idea for my final piece will be a series of 4-6 images that show off the people and places I photograph in the street surrounded by props that I have not quite decided on yet but they will show off the actions that are being shown in the images. I am going to print off by images on different sized canvases and hang them from the ceiling to give them the illusion of floating.

To start off my project I am going to have to do a vast amount of research and experimental shoots before I can photograph my final images. The research I will do will include case studies of photographers or other artists; I will do three technical case studies and three conceptual case studies; this will be to help me understand different techniques and also will inspire me when taking my final images as I will know which images of protests look good and what ones don't work as well. I will also do a case study on the history of street photography and what makes the photographs eye-catching and effective. I am then going to do a series of technical and conceptual experimental shoots to help my prepare for my final images. Over the half term I had the amazing opportunity to go and visit Iceland, where I did many photo shoots will will guide me when it comes to my final shoot. I will use these as technical shoots after I have edited them. I will also go around my local area for my conceptual shoots as well as taking images of people in a natural location setting. After I have completed these experimental shoots I will evaluate them so I can see what went well and what could be further improved. I am also going to do a research page on possible ways that I would present my work. I have a few ideas that I have written earlier in this post but I am open to change if I find a more effective way of presenting my images. To further my research I will try and explore busy places that I have never been before and also try and go to galleries or exhibitions with the theme of street photography; this will again give me some inspiration for my final images.

When shooting my experimental shoots and my final images, I will be using my Nikon 810 and switching between a 50mm Nikon lens and a 70-300mm lens. My exposure setting will depend on the weather and whether my selected protests are inside or outside. I assume that they will all be outside during the day, so that it will be bright outside but it can't be planned until I am there. I will most likely be using a fast shutter speed so I can capture the action of the protest sharply and clearly. I am going to also most likely use a low aperture setting so that the background is slightly blurred so that the focal point of my images are more prominent. The ISO will also be quite low as the images will be taken outside so there will be a lot of natural light.

There are a few difficulties that I may face when doing my final shoot. The main one being if I am actually photographing strangers and being able to get their consent. Although I believe that most people do not mind getting their photograph with, I may not be as welcomed as I would like to be. To overcome this I will always ask the person I am photographing or I could even be really sneaky and try and do it without them realising; this may also be helpful because the image will not be at all posed and I will be able to capture the most candid images I possibly can. The shoots I am doing will take up a lot of time because I would like to photograph as many people as I can in as many places as I can; this is not much of a problem because it means that I have a while to take all the images that I could possibly need. The cost is not a lot, all I would have to pay for is my travel to London when shooting there.

After taking my images I will be editing them. My plan is to not edit them a huge amount, possibly just adjusting the levels and curves to enhance the colours and the focal point of the image. I will practice my editing techniques for a few of my experimental shoots just to find out what editing techniques look the best and are the most effective.

Throughout doing my experimental shoots and all when it comes to finishing my final images I will be evaluating them in as much detail as possible to help me get the most out of my photographs and help me to learn and progress with my work. The most common way of reviewing my work will be to write evaluations on my blog because that is what I find easiest to gain feedback from. However, I will also be getting feedback from my tutor and my peers as it is good to get an outsiders perspective of your work as they may stop something that may not be so effective or is really effective that I was not able to identify.

The final step of my final major project will be presenting it. I have a few ideas but throughout the course of this project I know it will most likely change. As I've already said I will be doing a research page on the different ways that photographs can be presented; this will hopefully inspire me and give me some ideas for the way I present my work. I could also research this by going to galleries and exhibitions to see how it is done there. I do not want to use a generic idea of presenting my work as I want it to stand out. My initial idea is to use other props but I will research the most effective ways before I make my final decision.

During this project I am going to record my progress as I go also, I will do this through the evaluations of my experimental shoots as that I where I am going to make the most progress. After completing my experimental shoots I will evaluate them and if there is anything that I need to improve I will go back and try and shoot it again, this will help me develop my skills and improve my photographical knowledge. I will also have to record a bibliography throughout this unit to reference my research articles and show where I have gotten my information from. This is all leading up to my end of year exhibition where I will show all of my developed skills whilst producing an artistic and interesting final show.

Final Major Project Brief

I have been doing photography for around 5 years, it all started as a hobby but then my interest in the art grew and grew and now it is a life aspiration to become a photographer. Over the years of my studies I have looked into many genres of photography all whilst learning the skills and technical knowledge that is need when becoming a photographer. My favourite genre of photography is documentary photography which is what I am planning on studying at university in the next academic year. The reason for this being my favourite genre is because I love taking and viewing raw, candid photographs that have not been set up and ones that tell a story. I have explored other genres of photography but I do not find them as enjoyable to photograph.

Over the years, I have experimented and learned a variety of photography techniques to ensure that my photographs look as eye-catching as possible. These techniques include PhotoShop and general camera settings to make my photographs look as professional as they can be. I take a lot of my inspiration from other documentary and street photographer, my personal favourites include Dougie Wallace, Lee Jeffries and Corey Arnold. I enjoy their work for a variety of different reasons, including humour, colour and the stories behind the images, I believe those are key techniques to making a memorable photographs.

I also take inspiration from all aspects of the world around us when it comes to photography, things like the news and the media greatly inspire my images. One of my favourite projects of this year was when I had to create a triptych to celebrate 70 years of Harlow, I found it very interesting to compare what it was like back in 1947 to what it looks like now; this project also enabled my to learn a variety of different Photoshop techniques that I did not know before. Other projects I have completed during my academic years have always taught me new techniques and helped me photograph different genres. When I first started photographer I also wanted to me a music photographer because it is something that I love to listen to combined with photography. I tried out many different forms and even did it for my final major project in the first year of college; photographing concert-goers and live bands developed my love for photographing people in an unposed, natural state and made me explore documentary photography even more.

Over the years I have tried to do as much work experience as possible in the photography industry; this included shooting for furniture companies, photographing bands and following around a sub culture that live like they are still in the iron age. However, my personal favourite was getting the opportunity to work with ITV's set designer to produce a portfolio of his work. All this work experience has given me an idea of what it is like to work in the industry, all whilst gaining confidence and skills. In the future I would love to do a lot more work experience, so I can gain even more knowledge of the industry.

My initial idea for my FMP is street photography, however, I have not quite decided how I would like to portray that in an exhibition. For this unit I really wanted to do something documentary related as I am planning on doing it as a university degree. I am very inspired by street photography and I believe that it is a vary interesting subject to photograph which is why I am going to have a go and do it myself. At the end of April, the class is going on an overseas trip to Iceland, which is where I start my street photography journey. I will also visit places like London and also go around my home town to photograph for my FMP.

I will also look into a number of street photographers to help get me inspired. I haven't quite decided how I am going to portray my final piece in my exhibition but I want to do something unique and clever to make my piece stand out.

Action Plan/Reflective Journal

Week 1 (24th   April -28th  April)
  • Mindmap
  • Brief
  • Project Proposal
  • Action Plan
This week I started to come up with ideas for my FMP, I did research and explored my ideas with a mind map, I then wrote my project proposal to help guide the rest of my project. I then wrote this action plan to help me use my remaining time wisely.

Week 2 (1st May – 5th May)
  • ·     Technical Case Studies
  • ·     Creative Case Studies
  •    Street Photography Research
  • ·     Conceptual Shoot 1 (WAIST PHOTOGRAPHY)
This week I mainly focused on research. I studied 6 different photographers, looking at both the technical side of their work and also their conceptual side. I also did a bit of research on street photography so I could learn a little bit more about it, however I will be needing to do more research in the future to give me more ideas and to help my understanding. I also came up with the main focus of my FMP, the subject I have chosen is street photography which the theme of surveillance. On thursday I also did a conceptual shoot where I went to London to practice my street photography; when I evaluated the shoot it helped my explore what I could do to make my next shoots more effective.
Week 3 (8th May – 12th May)
  • ·     Technical Shoot Plans
  • ·     Conceptual Shoot Plans
  •    Research
  •       Artist Responses
  •       Image Based Solutions
This week I completed all my research, exploring different types of street photography with the theme of surveillance. I also research the facts on being watched with CCTV and explored a few extra photographers whose work has the same theme as my project. I also wrote out all of my shoot plans for this project which will help me explore my idea to its full potential. I have decided that I am not going to do a final shoot at the end of my project but instead, gather the best images from all my conceptual shoots and present them in the final exhibition. Finally, to go with my artist case studies, I completed image based solutions, whereby I created my own version of the artists photography. I also created some artist responses for each individual photographer; this helped me understand the theme of the specific photographer in more detail. I have also been writing a bibliography as I go of all my research.

Week 4 (15th May – 19th May)
  • ·     Peer Evaluation
  •    Conceptual Shoot 2 (ICELAND)
  • ·     Technical Shoots 1,2 (PHOTOSHOP)
  • ·     Evaluating
  •        Hockney Review
This week I have been focusing in on completing some of my conceptual and technical shoots. For two of my technical shoots, I have focused on Photoshop skills; these shoots are helpful when it comes to learning new techniques and skills that I will be able to use in my future photographs. I also have been evaluating the shoot that I completed when I went to Iceland, as well as choosing the best images from that shoot which will be later put on my website. After completing  a few conceptual shoots, I am learning what works well and what I could do to improve; this will help me develop on my future shoots.

Week 5 (22nd May – 26th May)
  • ·     Conceptual Shoot 3  (SURVEILLANCE)
  • ·     Technical Shoots 3,4 (SHUTTER SPEED AND NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY)
  • ·     Evaluating

This week I have been focusing on more conceptual and technical shoots, as well as evaluating them so see what I could improve on for next time.  My conceptual shoot was not successful at first so I had to redo it because I knew that I could improve on my images. Doing these shoots has helped me develop my ideas and given me some final images that will be shown in my exhibition.

Week 6 (29th May – 2nd June)
  • ·     Conceptual Shoots 4 (LONDON)
  • ·     Evaluating
This week I have been focused mostly on evaluating all my work and seeing what I could do to improve. I also did another conceptual shoot which I completed in London. This shoot I believe was my most successful because I used all the skills and practises that I had done on my previous shoots and made them better.

Week 7 (5th June – 6th June)
  • ·     Presentation Research
  •        Presentation Case Study and Exhibition Role Completion
  • ·     Final Images
  • ·     Final Evaluation
  •       Website
As I have completed all my conceptual and technical shoots, this week I was focusing on my final exhibition. I researched ways to present my images and as a class we all decided who was going to have what role in setting up or putting down the exhibition. I also have decided on my final images that I am going to show in the exhibition along with the props I am going to use and where about I am going to show it. I also made a website to showcase all my favourite work from the exhibition.

Week 8 (12th June – 13th June)
  • ·     Exhibition Preparation
As my role in the exhibition is not until the end, I spent this week going over all my work and seeing what could be done to improve all my work I have completed for my project, this included checking for spelling or punctuation mistakes and also ensuring that all my research was correct and well written.
Final Exhibition – (19th June - 23rd June)

My role in the exhibition was to take all the photography work down at the end. This was completed on the 23rd June after the exhibition had been up for the week.
