Gossip Over The Fence

Gossiping over your garden fence is a dying practise with nearly three-quarters of people saying that they could not confidently name two or more people living on their street.  British people are becoming more and more isolated from their local communities with more than half not knowing their neighbours' first names.

According to Martin Scott, head of Churchill home insurance, "Relationships with out neighbours have changed significantly over the years because the way we live, work and socialise has evolved. We move home more frequently, spend a lot less time communicating face to face and are more cautious about who we welcome into our homes. As a result, we know very little about our neighbours, as we all get on with our busy lives.'

13% of people said that they disliked, distrusted and deliberately avoided their neighbours. The attitude towards younger residents was more extreme with 20% of people indicating negative feelings towards them.

Maintaining a good relationship between your neighbours can make for a safer community and a more enjoyable place to live.
