Conceptual Shoot - Waist Photography

For this shoot I am going to be experimenting with photographing street photography whilst not looking into the view finder. I am going to do this experimental shoot around London and possibly in my home town and in and around college because I know it will be busy, so there will be a lot to photograph. The reason for not looking through the view finder is so I can candid, unposed photographs of the general public. I will also be using a range of low angle when taking my images which may be more aesthetically pleasing then a standard mid-range angle photograph. Below is an example of what I would like my images to resemble:

To do this shoot, I am simple just going to walk around where ever I chose to photograph and subtly point my camera as passers by and try and get a good photograph of them. I would describe a good photograph in this shoot to be one that is interesting and unique, catching people of guard, making good facial expressions or doing abstract things. The main issue I can think of with this shoot is that someone will not appreciate me taking their photograph if they catch me doing it but the easy solution for that is to simply just delete the image in front of them.

The equipment that I will need will simply just be my camera (Nikon D810), as I want to be as low-key as possible and walking around with a lot of camera equipment might prove difficult when wanting to photograph people without them knowing. I will probably only use my 50mm lens because it is easier to manage and stay hidden than my 700-300mm lens and I will be able to get some decent wide angle shots. I will also bring a spare battery just in case my one runs out and a spare SD card in case I use up all the memory.

When doing this shoot, it will be in the middle of the day when the natural lighting is bright, therefore I will not have to take or use a flash. That also means that I will have to use a low ISO, probably around 100-400. As I will be taking the photographs whilst my subjects are walking, I will need to use a fast shutter speed, most likely around 1/125-1/250. As I will not be looking through the view finder, it will be very difficult to use manual focus so I will have to change my settings to auto focus; this may also effect what I will have to change my aperture to as I will not be able to choose a specific focal point. Therefore, my aperture setting would have to be quite low.

Hopefully, this photo shoot will give me good images that I can use for my final pieces of regular people in the street being as natural as possible. Ideally, these images will be able to show the audience a documentary series of photographs that are exciting and inspiring.
